How to Get From Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc

TL;DR

  • Flying takes about 1 hour from Tan Son Nhat, on Vietnam Airlines or Sun PhuQuoc Airways.
  • Check the terminal on your ticket: Vietnam Airlines' domestic flights use T3, and Vietjet's check in at Hall A of T1.
  • Overland means a night bus from Mien Tay bus station, then a boat of about 2 hours 30 minutes from Rach Gia or 1 hour 20 minutes from Ha Tien.
  • There's no train to Phu Quoc, and no railway anywhere in the Mekong Delta.
  • Enter Vietnam at Saigon and you need an eVisa or a nationality exemption, because the island's 30-day rule only covers flying in direct or staying in the transit area.
Table of Contents

The quickest way from Ho Chi Minh to Phu Quoc is a flight: about 1 hour in the air over about 300 km, from Tan Son Nhat to Phu Quoc International Airport. The other way is an overnight sleeper bus to Rach Gia or Ha Tien, then a high-speed boat to Bai Vong Port on the island's east coast, and there's no train at all.

Both routes work, and they suit different trips. The flight is for people who want a beach by lunchtime. The bus and boat suit travelers already working through the Mekong Delta, or anyone who'd rather spend a night on a sleeper than in a hotel. For the wider picture of planes versus buses, see our guide to getting around Vietnam. One visa point changes plans too: once you've cleared immigration in Saigon, Phu Quoc's visa-free rule no longer covers you.

The Routes Compared: Plane, Boat or Car Ferry

Vietnam's tourism board lists two ways onto the island: direct flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and abroad, or ferries from Rach Gia and Ha Tien. From Saigon, that gives you four practical routes, and only the flight lands you at the airport. Every boat docks at Bai Vong.

If you're still choosing between starting your trip in Hanoi or Saigon, the distances settle it. Vietnam Airlines puts Hanoi to Phu Quoc at about 2 hours 5 minutes over 1,663 km, against about 1 hour and 300 km from Ho Chi Minh City. Phu Quoc is a southern trip, and Saigon is the gateway.

Flying: The One-Hour Hop From Tan Son Nhat

Most people fly, and it's hard to argue with. Vietnam Airlines averages 4 to 7 flights a day between Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC). Sun PhuQuoc Airways has flown Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City since its first commercial flights on November 1, 2025. We don't quote airfares here, because a price in a guide is out of date by the time you read it. Compare on the airlines' own sites.

Bring the passport itself, not a copy. Vietnam Airlines asks foreigners on domestic flights for a passport with the most recent entry stamp, plus a visa or residence document unless you're visa-exempt. If you flew into Saigon from abroad, that's the stamp you got at Tan Son Nhat.

⚠️ Check the terminal on your ticket before you get in the taxi. Tan Son Nhat now splits domestic flights between two buildings. Vietnam Airlines moved all its domestic flights to the new Terminal T3 on May 17, 2025, and Vietjet's domestic flights have checked in at Hall A of Terminal T1 since January 13, 2026. Plenty of older guides still describe one domestic terminal.

Bus and Boat via Rach Gia: The Overnight Classic

Sleeper buses and limousine vans leave from Mien Tay bus station, and the ferry operator Phu Quoc Express says the ride to Rach Gia takes about 5 to 6 hours. Its advice is to catch a bus between 11 p.m. and midnight, reach Rach Gia around 5 to 6 a.m., eat breakfast and board the 7 a.m. boat. Rach Gia now sits in An Giang province, after Kien Giang merged into An Giang in 2025, so don't be thrown when a ticket or map says An Giang.

The boat is the long part. Rach Gia to Bai Vong is about 120 km and about 2 hours 30 minutes on Phu Quoc Express catamarans, with reference departures at 7 a.m., 10:20 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 1 p.m. The operator says the exact time is the one on your ticket, and it can shift with weather or peak season. Fares are in its Rach Gia fare table for 2026: an ECO adult seat is 315,000 VND one way and a VIP seat is 500,000 VND, and prices can change at Tet.

⚠️ Rach Gia has two separate terminals for Phu Quoc. Passenger speedboats leave from the high-speed pier, while the Thanh Thoi car ferry has its own terminal and boarding lanes and takes about 3 hours to 3 hours 15 minutes. Other speedboat companies share the pier too, so match the company and berth printed on your ticket before you board.

Bus and Boat via Ha Tien: The Short Crossing

Ha Tien gives you the shortest time at sea. Phu Quoc Express calls it the shortest sea route to the island, about 45 km and about 1 hour 20 minutes, with reference departures at 7 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

Getting to Ha Tien is the overnight part. The operator suggests a sleeper bus leaving Mien Tay between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., which reaches Ha Tien bus station between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. The major bus companies run a free shuttle from the bus station to the ferry terminal, so the first boat is an easy target. The operator gives departure and arrival windows, not a fixed travel time, so plan around them.

Choose Ha Tien if you'd rather spend as little time on the water as possible. Choose Rach Gia for four daily sailings instead of three, and a last boat at 1 p.m. rather than 11:45 a.m.

Ferry Day: Papers, Refunds and Where You Land

Phu Quoc Express asks foreign passengers for the original passport and visa, not copies, and wants everyone at the pier 45 minutes before departure. Read the refund terms before you buy. The operator charges 20% to cancel more than 24 hours before departure, refunds nothing inside 24 hours and refunds 100% when a sailing is canceled for bad weather.

Bad weather isn't hypothetical. Vietnam's tourism board says the May to October rainy season brings rougher seas, while November to April is the calm, dry season.

⚠️ Don't put the boat on the same day as an international flight. A weather cancellation gets your fare back, not your connection. From May to October especially, leave a night between the ferry and any flight you can't afford to miss.

Every boat lands at Bai Vong, on the east coast, not in the main town. From the port it's about 18 to 20 km, or 25 to 30 minutes by car, to Duong Dong, 8 to 10 km to the airport and about 22 km to Sao Beach. Budget a taxi on arrival.

Driving Down, and the Train That Doesn't Exist

With your own car, Phu Quoc Express points drivers to the Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong-My Thuan expressway, then the Lo Te-Rach Soi expressway into Rach Gia. Speedboats don't carry cars, so taking one across means a pre-booked ticket on the Thanh Thoi car ferry. The operator's other suggestion is to park in Rach Gia overnight, take the speedboat and rent a vehicle on the island.

There's no train, in either direction. No railway runs into the Mekong Delta, and the nearest thing is a plan on paper: in February 2026 the Ministry of Construction ordered a careful review of a proposed Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho railway, estimated at about US$9 billion. Search for a Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh train and you get the same answer: fly, or take the boat and bus in reverse. Trains are a fine way to cover the coast farther north, and here's how Vietnam's railway works.

Entering at Saigon: Where the Visa-Free Rule Stops

This is the part of the trip that catches people out. You can visit Phu Quoc island visa-free for up to 30 days. You can fly to Phu Quoc direct, or connect through another Vietnamese international airport as long as you stay in the transit area. That rule stops at the immigration desk. Spend a few days in Saigon first and you've entered Vietnam, so you need an eVisa or a nationality exemption before you land at Tan Son Nhat. A same-day connection can do the same thing. Connecting to a domestic flight means clearing immigration, so you need a visa or a visa exemption. Ask your airline before you book whether your connection keeps you in the transit area all the way to Phu Quoc.

⚠️ Phu Quoc's exemption covers the island and nothing else. Phu Quoc's visa exemption covers the island only. Going on to the mainland without a visa breaks the rules and can bring a fine of VND 3 to 5 million under Decree 282/2025/ND-CP. The boat back to Rach Gia or Ha Tien counts as much as a flight to Saigon, and the eVisa is issued to people outside Vietnam, not to visitors already in the country. If Saigon or the delta is anywhere in your plans, apply before you fly.

Citizens of every country and territory can apply for a Vietnam eVisa. That's been the rule since August 15, 2023. A Vietnam eVisa can be valid for up to 90 days, and you can choose a single-entry or a multiple-entry eVisa. You can apply yourself on the government's site, evisa.gov.vn, or have Vietnam Visa by BDA, a private company not affiliated with the Vietnamese government, prepare, check and file it, with Vietnam Immigration making the decision. Here's how the eVisa application works, and for the exemption lists and the island rule in full, read Vietnam's visa rules and the Phu Quoc exemption.

Tan Son Nhat has also piloted Vietnam Immigration's Pre-arrival Information form since April 15, 2026. It's optional, and it isn't a visa. If Phu Quoc is your whole trip, flying straight in from abroad keeps the visa-free route open, and our guide to international flights to Vietnam covers getting here.

A Few Parting Notes

Coming back, Phu Quoc Express lists reference departures from Bai Vong to Rach Gia at 7:10 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. and to Ha Tien at 7 a.m., 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you came in on the island's visa-free rule, you need a visa before you take either boat back, and because the eVisa is only issued to people outside Vietnam, that has to be settled before you fly to the island.

Keep the passport where you can reach it the whole way. The airline checks it at the domestic desk, the ferry checks it at the pier and the island's visa-free rule depends on how you arrived.
