Contact Address, Province and Ward on the Vietnam E-Visa Form

TL;DR

  • Your Vietnam hotel goes in section 6, "Residential address in Viet Nam," not in section 4's "Contact address."
  • The form has no district field: pick one of 34 provinces and cities, then the ward or commune from your hotel's current address.
  • Hoi An is under DA NANG City, Phu Quoc under AN GIANG and Vung Tau under HO CHI MINH City.
  • Staying in several places? Enter the first one; each place you sleep declares you to the local police.
  • Book your first night before you apply, because the Vietnam address and both dropdowns are required.
Table of Contents

Your hotel doesn't go in the contact address on the Vietnam visa form. It goes in section 6, "Residential address in Viet Nam," with its city picked from the Province/city list and its ward from the Ward / commune list, while section 4's "Contact address" is about you at home. There's no district box anywhere, because Vietnam abolished districts on July 1, 2025 and now has 34 provinces and cities and 3,321 wards, communes and special zones.

Every label, province and ward below is quoted from the government eVisa form at evisa.gov.vn as it served them on October 15, 2026. If you haven't settled how to apply yet, start with our Vietnam visa guide.

Two Address Blocks: Section 4 Is You, Section 6 Is Your Stay

The government eVisa form runs in nine numbered sections, and addresses turn up in two of them. Section 4, Contact information, holds three required lines about you, then an emergency contact (full name, current residential address, telephone number and relationship). None of them is labeled as an address in Vietnam.

Vietnam comes in at section 6, Information about the trip. Its "Residential address in Viet Nam" box asks for "the intended temporary address in Vietnam," and under it sit two required, searchable dropdowns. The ward list only loads once you've picked the province, and there's no district box between them.

  • Section 4, Permanent residential address: where you live now, up to 255 characters.
  • Section 4, Contact address: where you can be reached, up to 255 characters.
  • Section 4, Telephone number: your own number, up to 50 characters.
  • Section 6, Residential address in Viet Nam: hotel name, street number and street, up to 500 characters.
  • Section 6, Province/city and Ward / commune: searched and picked from the lists.

Contact Address: Your Home, Not Your Hotel

The portal never defines "Contact address" or "Permanent residential address," which is why forum answers contradict each other. The best clue is the Vietnamese version of the same form. The line shown in English as "Permanent residential address" reads "Nơi ở hiện nay," which means current place of residence. "Contact address" reads "Địa chỉ liên lạc," a plain contact address.

So, going by the form's layout rather than any published definition, the safe reading is this. Permanent residential address is where you live now, in full, with your country. Contact address is where mail and messages reach you; if that's your home, type the same address again.

Write each one the way you'd address an envelope: number, street, city, postcode, country. If your home address is usually written in Japanese, Korean, Arabic or any other non-Latin script, transliterate it first. The form's text boxes refuse anything else with the message "Only Latin characters allowed," and the portal's instructions want every answer in English.

Province and Ward: Why There's No District Box

Vietnam switched to a two-tier local government on July 1, 2025, reorganizing its communes and completely abolishing district-level units. The form follows the new map exactly. Its province list holds 34 provinces and cities, and its ward lists add up to 3,321 wards, communes and special zones. Of those, 13 are special zones, written "DAC KHU," such as DAC KHU PHU QUOC.

That's why a booking that names Ba Dinh District or District 1 leaves you hunting for a box that isn't there. Older guidebook province names won't help either. Quang Nam, Kien Giang, Binh Thuan, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Thua Thien Hue aren't in the province list at all.

To find your ward:

  1. Take the address from your booking confirmation or the hotel's own website, and look for a version that names a ward and no district.
  2. In Province/city (placeholder "Enter City/Province"), type the city or province and pick it.
  3. In Ward / commune (placeholder "Enter Ward / Commune"), type just the ward's name and pick the match.
  4. Type the hotel's name, street number and street into "Residential address in Viet Nam."

Hanoi: The Form's Own Example, Updated

Hanoi is HA NOI City in the province list, and its ward list holds 126 units. The central wards include HOAN KIEM, CUA NAM, BA DINH, VAN MIEU - QUOC TU GIAM, HAI BA TRUNG, TAY HO, GIANG VO and NGOC HA, each ending in WARD in the dropdown.

The worked example is the hotel the portal uses in its own hint. Hanoi Daewoo Hotel now gives its address on its own contact page as 360 Kim Ma Street, Giang Vo Ward, Hanoi, so on the form it reads:

  • Residential address in Viet Nam: Daewoo Hotel, 360 Kim Ma Street
  • Province/city: HA NOI City
  • Ward / commune: GIANG VO WARD

⚠️ Don't copy the form's own hint. The hint under "Residential address in Viet Nam" still says "Daewoo Hotel, 360 Kim Ma, Ba Dinh, Ha Noi," and that Ba Dinh is the old district. BA DINH WARD also exists in today's Hanoi list, but the hotel's ward is Giang Vo. Follow the hotel's current address, not the hint.

For the format, copy Vietnam Immigration itself. The portal's home page gives the Immigration Department's Hanoi address as "69 Mac Thai To, Yen Hoa Ward, Hanoi City": number, street, ward, city, no district. Write yours in that order and it lines up with the two dropdowns underneath.

Ho Chi Minh City: Sai Gon Ward and the PHUONG Entries

Ho Chi Minh City is HO CHI MINH City in the list, with 168 units under it. Central wards include SAI GON, BEN THANH, TAN DINH, CAU ONG LANH, BAN CO and XUAN HOA. Vung Tau and Con Dao now sit here too, as VUNG TAU WARD and DAC KHU CON DAO.

Rex Hotel on Nguyen Hue publishes its address as "141 NGUYEN HUE - SAI GON WARD, HO CHI MINH CITY - VIET NAM", so on the form it reads:

  • Residential address in Viet Nam: Rex Hotel, 141 Nguyen Hue
  • Province/city: HO CHI MINH City
  • Ward / commune: SAI GON WARD

Some entries in this list are written the Vietnamese way round, as "PHUONG TAN SON NHAT" or "PHUONG GO VAP" (phuong is Vietnamese for ward), instead of ending in WARD. If a ward seems to be missing, search for its name alone rather than typing WARD after it. A booking that still says District 1 can't tell you the ward, so get the hotel's current address before you start.

Popular Destinations: Where They Sit in the New Dropdowns

Outside the two big cities, the surprise is usually the province. Here's where the usual stops sit in the form's dropdowns, checked on October 15, 2026:

Ha GiangTUYEN QUANGHA GIANG 1 WARD or HA GIANG 2 WARD; DONG VAN COMMUNE on the loop

⚠️ Phu Quoc only? You may not need an eVisa at all. The island is visa-free for up to 30 days, including when you connect through another Vietnamese international airport and stay in the transit area. But the exemption covers the island only, and going on to the mainland without a visa breaks the rules and can bring a fine. Since the eVisa is issued to people outside Vietnam, apply before you fly if the mainland is anywhere in your plans.

⚠️ Pick the province first, then the ward. The ward search only covers the province you chose, and some tourist names turn up elsewhere. The dropdowns hold a HOI AN COMMUNE under AN GIANG, a HA LONG COMMUNE under THANH HOA and a DONG VAN WARD under NINH BINH, and none of them is the place you're visiting. The Ha Giang loop's Dong Van is DONG VAN COMMUNE under TUYEN QUANG.

Several Stops: The First-Address Rule and the Checkbox Behind It

A Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Hoi An trip has three addresses, and the form wants one. The portal's FAQ settles it: if you'll stay in several places, declare the first address where you'll stay. That's the one for section 6. On a tour, it's the first hotel on the itinerary. Still choosing a first base? Start with our guide to where to stay in Vietnam.

The rest of the trip is handled on the ground, and that's what the form's required checkbox, "Committed to declare temporary residence," is about. The portal's rules for declaring temporary residence say you declare through whoever runs your accommodation, with the police of the ward, commune or town where it is, and again every time you move. At a hotel, that happens when you check in. Ticking the box means you'll make sure each place you sleep has declared you.

Staying with friends or family works the same way, except your host makes the declaration. The U.S. Embassy's understanding is that all visitors, Vietnamese citizens included, register their temporary residence with the police where they stay overnight.

A Few Parting Notes

The address lines are covered by the declaration you sign before paying, that everything you've stated is true and accurate, and Vietnam Immigration doesn't refund its $25 or $50 fee if an application is refused. So check the ward against the one your hotel publishes before you submit, not after.

If you apply with Vietnam Visa by BDA, you never see these fields. Our checkout runs in four steps (Applicant Info, Trip Detail, Review, Payment), you add your residence address and hotel in the Trip Detail step, and our team transfers them into the right government fields, as how our Vietnam eVisa application works explains. Vietnam Visa by BDA is a private company, not affiliated with the Vietnamese government: Vietnam Immigration issues the visa, and we prepare, check and file the application. For the rest of the form, our Vietnam eVisa FAQs answer the questions we hear most.
